Sword Camp! Short swords for young smiths.
June 25 @ 12:00 PM - June 28 @ 4:00 PM

In this brand new 4 day summer day camp at Hammerspace our resident swordsmith Dave will be guiding 3-4 intrepid young smiths through all the steps of making a short sword from scratch.
We will begin with some specialized steel meant for high performance, strength, and edge retention: 5160 Spring Steel
This carbon steel has the perfect balance between toughness and edge retention. It's extremely forgiving to heat treat, with exceptional hardness and fine grain structure. This steel has great stability in quench and is easy to work with and grind, even at higher hardnesses.
On day one, students will go though some general knowledge building and learn to grind a sword profile, and create a fuller for the center of our blades.
On day two, we will grind the bevel for the edges. We will prepare our tangs for our cross guards and handles and finally heat treat our blade to complete our work for day two.
Over night, our smith will complete the 2 hour tempering process.
On Saturday, we will begin by grinding, machining and forging our crossguards and drilling and tapping our pommels, interspersed with cleaning and sanding our blades from day 1. We will complete our day by sawing and gluing exotic hardwood handle blanks.
On Sunday we will shape and sand our handles and leather spacers and assemble our finished sword as well create a leather frog to carry our swords on a belt.
