Blacksmithing Challenge – Fancy twists – Mumblety Peg
November 27 @ 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM
This Blacksmithing class will involve using the forge and hammers to draw out and point a heavy square rod. We will then learn to create advanced fancy twists while you make your own "Mumblety-peg".
Knives are not welcome in school yards today, but when grandparents, their parents and their parents' parents were young, one of their favorite recess pastimes was a knife-flipping game called mumblety-peg.
Mumblety-peg rivaled marbles among boys in popularity and frequency of play two generations ago.
At a time when more boys carried pocket knives to school than not, this game involved tossing a knife in a series of prescribed flips so that the blade would stick into soft, loamy soil with the knife standing upright. The game could also be played with a sharply pointed stick.
These reimagined "Mumblety Pegs" can be used to show off your blacksmithing chops while replacing pocket knives so that this game can be enjoyed without the need for bandaids.
